The York River is a navigable estuary, approximately 34 miles long, in eastern Virginia in the United States. It ranges in width from 1 mile at its head to 2.5 miles near its mouth on the west side of Chesapeake Bay. Its watershed drains an area of the coastal plain of Virginia north and east of Richmond. The only vehicular crossing of the York River is the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, a swing-type drawbridge which carries U.S. Highway 17 between Yorktown and Gloucester Point.

Mobjack Bay is a bay on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay in Virginia in the United States. It lies between the Rappahannock River on the north and the York River on the south. The World War II United States Navy motor torpedo boat tender USS Mobjack was named for Mobjack Bay. A pier, just offshore, provides roosts for a seasonally changing variety of birds. During migration, watch for shorebirds on both rocky and muddy shorelines bordering the site and land birds in the trees near the road. In summer, gardens just behind the bay’s edge are attractive to several species of butterflies.

Discover what it took for the United States to be independent as you explore the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. At Yorktown, in the fall of 1781, General George Washington, with allied American and French forces, besieged General Charles Lord Cornwallis’s British army.  On October 19, Cornwallis surrendered, effectively ending the war and ensuring independence.

Williamsburg was one of America’s first planned cities. Laid out in 1699 under the supervision of Governor Francis Nicholson, it was to be a “new and well-ordered city” suitable for the capital of the largest and most populous of the British colonies in America. Colonial Williamsburg, the nation’s largest living history museum, is actually a functional colonial town itself, and one of the most popular destinations in the world!

Chincoteague is a town on the island of the same name, in Virginia’s Eastern Shore region. It’s a gateway to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, on Assateague Island, which has beaches and wild Chincoteague ponies. The breed is showcased at the Chincoteague Pony Centre. Oyster-industry artifacts and model boats are displayed at the Museum of Chincoteague Island. Veteran’s Memorial Park has a pier and water views.
